“In August of 1836, brothers J.K. and A.C. Allen bought 6,642 acres of unimproved land
near the head of Buffalo Bayou and named it Houston. The nearest settlement was
Harrisburg, laid out by John Harris in 1826. What is, now, known as Harris County was
one of the original 23 counties in Texas, created in 1836, but from 1836 to 1840 it was
known as Harrisburg County.”
